Constant Gardener

Went to see the movie Constant Gardener with Nigel and Prakash tonight. I liked it very much. The story was brilliant and very emotive. Love being a prevailing theme throughout. The movie showed, in essence, the defiance of a small few to the hugely negative actions of large careless corporations. A theme which is on my mind a lot of the time.

Computer Woes x 10,000

I thought things were bad before...
My PC today just switched off and would not power back on. After trying loads of things with the motherboard, It still wouldn't work.
Eventually however, it did start up again (not before me being convinced that I'd lost the processor). Once in windows, I notice that my hardware monitor tells me that the 3.3v rail is up at 3.9v! After a quick check with the multimeter, I verify that the power supply is indeed SCREWED.

Bummer.

Ireland's First Vidcast

After 28 hours of video editing (and some sleep in-between), Ireland's first vidcast/vodcast has been produced by myself, Francis and Gareth.
Adobe premiere and VirtualDub are a pain to use. Especially exporting xvid.

Ubuntu

Just reinstalled ubuntu on my laptop and I must say that 5.10 "Breezy Badger" is pretty nice. It's got proper power management support for my laptop now and I can use my wireless card in Ad-Hoc mode.
Ubuntu has to be the best desktop linux variant at the moment. I just hope their forays into enterprise systems doesn't mean that the home user loses out.

Computer Woes

My desktop is on the brink, I'm getting more memory for it, but looks like a Windows reinstall is inevitable. My laptop windows installation became unusable a long time ago, and I am just after breaking the Ubuntu installation on it. So more re-installs there.

All round, my luck is down with computers at the moment.

Damn Helicopter

Right now i'm trying to study but the constant noise of a helicopter flying overhead is EXTREMELY distracting and annoying. The reason the helicopter's there? Well, it's the night before hallowe'en and people have been letting of fireworks. So the Garda send a helicopter up to monitor and scare people. The reason's my window's open? The heat in my building is constantly stuck on at full blast.
The legalisation of fireworks may stop people getting injured, but we live in a hypocrital society. We can injure ourselves many other ways (excessive alcohol, smoking, driving) but not this way. Alcohol and smoking have far more detrimental effects on society than a few fireworks lighting up the sky.
If people want to be idiots and play around with matches and fireworks, then they should be allowed to do so. Otherwise you're disrupting natural selection!

Buck 65

I went to see Buck 65 at the Village with Steven last night. It was an excellent gig. I realised that rap doesn't have to be crap. I'm realising that all music genres have good stuff. It's just that only the crap stuff appears in the mainstream. The McDonalds of music.

Richard Tefry aka "Buck 65" was an extremely nice guy. He autographed my ticket.

Myself and John Bayne hiked the Dublin mounains yesterday. It took 6 hours. We both got pretty bad sunburn however as the weather got really good when we were up there.

After a whole year of the computer science labs turning into a PC graveyard. Dell are finally replacing all the motherboards.

I don't know exactly the cause of the problem but I'd guess it was an overheating thing.

Ok, so I keep changing blogs....
But, livejournal just didn't cut it (ugly themes) and I need to buy some decent hosting for wordpress (watch this space).
In the meantime I'm going to use blogger. I've used it before, but as a plus blogspot no longer as an ad banner. Thanks Google!

I am just after using the blogger spellchecking facility and it doesn't recognise the words 'blog' and 'blogger'!
